Spring fashion guide: Wearing florals the modern way

Fashion week Outfit Two – Guns N’ Roses

Florals are everywhere during the spring and summer seasons, and reasonably so. I love florals. They impart a certain youthful elegance to the wearer. They are also a perfect cop-out option for people like me – who do not like committing to bold colours. Florals are the epitome of chic. As much of a closet staple as they are, I think florals are difficult for the designer and for the wearer. Demure floral prints walk a fine line between ‘classic and chic’ and ‘old lady and dated’. Modern bold, colourful florals are easily confused with loud and ungraceful. Many would think florals are ‘vintage’. But as they say, the old always becomes the new. Here are the few tricks up my sleeve to revamp the florals. I wore this outfit to the fashion week, but I thought this is also something great for upcoming spring.

Dress: Alexander McQueen (Sold out)

Bag: Givenchy (similar)

Trench coat: Jack Wills

1. Bold and loud

I think one of the most dominant features of vintage florals is that they are very ‘dainty’. Therefore, the ideal way to avoid that look is to go the opposite of that i.e. Bold. I would go for statement floral pieces, like this rose-printed dress. I think less is more when it comes to bold patterns – and nothing is more modern and effortless than one single accent print.

2. Go monochrome

When in doubt, go monochrome – that is one of my mottos. I think the black-and-white palette is so versatile, and because it is so minimalistic, it can truly modernise any style. In this case, I think black and white florals give me punk/rock vibes. Not only that, metallic colours eg. grey/silver are my favourites. There is nothing that screams modern like metallics do. Grey florals are the best of both worlds – I am digging that guns n’ roses theme.

3. Finish your rock anthem

Many people overlook the importance of shoes and accessories to complete their outfits. In this case, this is particularly important.

Again, if you go the vintage route, you would usually see white lace mary-jane shoes or something. To NOT do that, opt for shoes that are ‘modern’. We are talking about metallic pointed toe stiletto heels. If my outfit is monochrome, I always try to jazz things up a bit with my shoes, but not excessively so. A pair of rose-gold stilettos is a good way to strike a balance. To tie in with the floral print of the dress, I went for shoes that have a bold metallic floral detail.

For my bag – I went for a minimalistic black leather satchel bag. Minimalistic absolutely characterises modernism.

4. Silhouette – the modern woman

I think in terms of the silhouette of the entire outfit, bodycon is definitely not the way to go. You want to look effortless and chic. The more preferable silhouette is a tailored fit. I think it is a very empowering silhouette – it is definitely power-wear. However, it is important to remember your body when you dress yourself. This dress has a dainty ribbon/belt to clinch in at the waist. To accentuate your proportions, I always put my belt a bit higher than my actual waist (fashion 101!).

I went for a classic trench coat to top it all off. A trench coat is just the embodiment of tailored chic.

I am missing fashion week so much! I cannot wait for September fashion week! 1-3-8 xoxo
